Can I rank a new domain quickly?
This is a question I hear asked on all the SEO forums and I have a very quick answer to this. NO.
You may have been able to do this 3 or 4 years ago but from my own experience and from what I hear from others this is now almost impossible. There is an exception to this though. If you are ranking for very long-tail non-commercial search terms then this is possible and you can hit #1 in a short period of time. Try this with a competitive keyword and you are going to find yourself hitting your head against a brick wall.
What is the solution?
If I am starting a new project or creating a new brand (Index Nuke for example) then buying a new domain is OK because I am in this for the long hall and don’t mind the slow organic growth that comes along with this. If however, I am wanting to start a a project to quickly rank for some heavy commercial keywords then buying a new domain is pretty much a waste of time. This is why I buy after market domains. What are after market domains? Well, simply put, these domains have simply expired or the owner has decided to sell them. Buying an after market domain gives you the following benefits: –
- It is aged (you can get domains from the 1990’s)
- It has a backlink profile (Great for SEO)
- It’s already indexed (most of the time)
- It has a level of trust and not in any Google Sandbox (unless it has a shady history)
You can pickup after market domains from Godaddy from as little as $10 or places such as Namejet, Snapnames and Sedo to name but a few.
If you are thinking of purchasing an after market domain then you need to spend time researching the domains history, potential value and domain metrics. A good tool I use is Magestic SEO. Never buy an after market domain without first performing some kind of due diligence.
What is the benefit of buying an aged domain?
Buying an aged domain (depending on the domain history and metrics) can significantly speed up the ranking process. Because the domain may already have a backlink history, is aged and has a level of trust then any SEO you perform both Onsite and Offsite can quickly reflect on the rankings you achieve. Most of the time performing just a little bit of SEO and sending a few quality backlinks can move things in the right direction in just a week or two. Just make sure you have the Onsite SEO nailed first.
